Beethoven to Beyoncé. 52 artists, 52 weeks, about fifteen minutes each.

A Year of Music is a full year of family music study for ages 5–12. Jazz to reggae, classical to contemporary, built so you can open it and start this week.

You don't need to be musical. No instrument. No ability to read music. Nobody performs anything. You put on one piece of music a week and you talk about it, and that's the entire method.

Why listening, and not lessons

Think about how we teach reading. We read to children for years, thousands of hours of input, long before anyone asks them to read aloud to a room.

Music is the one subject where we skip that part. Straight to the instrument, the weekly lesson, and a recital in June where an eight-year-old survives Ode to Joy in front of forty adults. It's why so many children decide early that music isn't for them.

This is the missing years of input. It isn't a replacement for lessons. It's what comes before them, and what makes them stick if you ever do.

How it works

  1. Print the weekly artist study. One beautifully designed page.
  2. Listen together during the week. Use the curated list in the car, at tea time, on a quiet afternoon.
  3. Learn the story behind the music. The artist's life, the history, why they mattered.
  4. Talk about it. Conversation prompts that work for a six-year-old and a twelve-year-old at the same table.
  5. Make something, if you feel like it. Optional creative prompts. Skippable without guilt.

Made by a homeschooling mother, in an actual family

This was built for my own three children first, then tested on them for a year. It's designed around real life: car journeys, interrupted mornings, weeks where nothing goes to plan. That's the only kind of week I've ever had.

Use it during tea time, morning basket, car rides, quiet afternoons, or family listening nights. It fits wherever there's fifteen minutes.
